Adjustment 1: what you switch on matters more than user count

Datasheet throughput is measured doing plain firewalling. Real deployments enable intrusion detection, VPNs and content filtering — and each costs CPU. Broad Suricata rulesets can take a third to half of a small appliance's throughput; every simultaneous VPN user adds encryption work. This is why the honest sizing question isn't how many people? but what will the box be doing? If the answer includes 'IDS on everything and thirty home workers on VPN', go up a size from the table.

Adjustment 2: size for your next connection, not your current one

A firewall serves five-plus years. FTTP is rolling out; leased-line prices keep falling; the 500 Mbps line you have today is likely 1 Gbps mid-life. Buying to today's connection is how a firewall becomes the bottleneck in year three. One model up typically costs £150–£350 more — cheap insurance against replacing the whole unit.

Adjustment 3: when uptime is money, pair up

From the 6100 upward, consider two units in an HA pair (pfSense CARP failover): one fails, the other takes over in seconds, and maintenance stops needing a maintenance window. It doubles hardware cost, so it's for businesses where an hour offline costs more than a second appliance — which, for a 100-person company, it usually does. Which Netgate firewall do I need for a 1 Gbps leased line?+
To firewall a full 1 Gbps symmetric line with headroom for IDS and VPN, start at the Netgate 4200 MAX (8.61 Gbps firewall throughput). The 2100 will route a 1 Gbps line for basic firewalling, but enabling intrusion detection or carrying VPN traffic will pull real-world throughput below the line speed.
How many users can a Netgate 2100 handle?+
As a rule of thumb, up to about 25 typical office users on a connection up to ~500 Mbps. The honest constraint isn't user count — it's what you enable: heavy IDS rulesets and many simultaneous VPN users are what push a small appliance over.
Does intrusion detection really halve throughput?+
Inspecting every packet costs CPU, and on smaller appliances enabling Suricata with a broad ruleset can reduce usable throughput by a third to a half. That's why we size with headroom rather than to the datasheet number — the datasheet figure is plain firewalling, not firewalling plus everything you'll actually switch on.
Should I buy bigger than I need today?+
Modestly, yes. A firewall is typically in service five-plus years; UK connection speeds and VPN use only go one way. Our rule: size for the connection you'll have in three years, not the one you have today. The step up one model is usually £150–£350 — far cheaper than replacing an undersized unit in year two.
