pfSense vs WatchGuard for UK small businesses: Security Suites, renewals and ownership

Updated August 2026 Β· Written by the Firewall Buddy team. We sell pfSense appliances, so read this knowing that β€” we've kept it fair and say plainly when WatchGuard is the better fit.

The Firebox model: good kit, rented features

WatchGuard's Firebox T-series is well-regarded hardware with a strong UK channel β€” plenty of British SMEs run one. The catch is the commercial structure: nearly everything that makes a Firebox more than a basic router lives in the Basic or Total Security Suite, renewed annually. IPS updates, web filtering, sandboxing, cloud logging and visibility, and support itself are all subscription-dependent.

Netgate/pfSense Plus takes the opposite approach: the licence ships with the appliance, updates are free for the device's life, and the security tooling β€” Suricata IDS/IPS, pfBlockerNG threat and content blocking β€” costs nothing on top. What you buy is what you own.

Three years, side by side

A 20-person office on a Netgate 4200 MAX spends Β£546 inc. VAT once (Β£695 with our professional setup) and Β£0/year after that. A T-series Firebox with Total Security is commonly sold as a three-year bundle precisely because the yearly figure looks less comfortable on its own β€” over that term the suite typically costs as much as or more than the hardware. As with every vendor comparison we publish: get the three-year all-in quote and compare. We don't print WatchGuard street prices because bundle discounts vary too much to be honest about.

End-of-life matters too: when a Firebox model reaches end-of-sale, suite renewals eventually stop being offered and you're rebuying hardware on WatchGuard's timetable, not yours.

Where WatchGuard genuinely wins

WatchGuard has built excellent multi-tenant tooling for MSPs β€” an IT provider managing fifty client Fireboxes through WatchGuard Cloud gets genuine operational value, and their tabletop appliances with PoE and Wi-Fi tie-ins suit certain retail estates. If your IT provider is a committed WatchGuard house, weigh the relationship. (If you are that MSP and fancy owning your stack instead of renting it, our white-label programme exists for exactly that conversation.)

Switching a Firebox out without drama

Our migration service translates your policy set β€” policies, aliases, NAT, VPNs β€” into a cleanly-built pfSense Plus config, tested in parallel while your Firebox keeps running, then swapped in an out-of-hours window with a written rollback plan. From Β£399 inc. VAT. Most customers book it for the month their suite renewal is due.

Frequently asked questions

Is pfSense a match for a WatchGuard Firebox on features?+
For the things a UK SME actually uses β€” stateful firewalling, VLANs, site-to-site and remote-access VPN, intrusion prevention, web filtering β€” yes. WatchGuard bundles its versions of these into the Basic and Total Security Suites, paid annually; pfSense Plus delivers the equivalents through included packages such as Suricata and pfBlockerNG with no recurring licence.
What do WatchGuard Security Suites actually gate?+
A Firebox without an active suite loses far more than threat feeds: logging and reporting through WatchGuard Cloud, IPS updates, web filtering, sandboxing and support all hang off the subscription. Many buyers discover the hardware price is the smaller half of the three-year cost. A Netgate appliance keeps its full feature set with no subscription.
Can you migrate a WatchGuard config to pfSense?+
Yes. We read your Firebox policy set, translate policies, aliases, NAT and VPNs into pfSense Plus, re-test every tunnel, and cut over in an out-of-hours window with a rollback plan β€” from Β£399 inc. VAT for a single site.
When is WatchGuard the right choice?+
If you're an MSP running many customer Fireboxes through WatchGuard Cloud's multi-tenant tooling, or an organisation invested in their tabletop-managed model with trained staff, it's a coherent ecosystem. For a single business running one or a few firewalls, the annual suite costs buy little that pfSense doesn't include.
